"Quantum simulation hits the open road"  - names his article Prof. Dan Browne from the University College London.

physics.aps.org/viewpoint-for/10.1103/PhysRevLett.107.12050

Prof. Dan Browne from the University College London in the newest issue of APS Physics writes about the QEssence's researchers latest discovery (prl.aps.org/abstract/PRL/v107/i12/e120501) that using a quantum computer to simulate another quantum system will work even when the modeled system is not isolated from its environment.

"One of the most important practical applications of a quantum computer would be the simulation of other quantum systems. Until now, the possibility of an accurate simulation had been rigorously demonstrated only for closed quantum systems—those with no decoherence or dissipation due to interactions with an environment. In Physical Review Letters, Martin Kliesch of the Free University of Berlin and the University of Potsdam, Germany, and his colleagues have shown rigorously that open quantum systems—those which interact with an environment—can also be efficiently simulated with quantum computers [1]. This opens up the potential impact of quantum computers to important applications in condensed-matter physics, quantum chemistry, and even biology. (...)"

starts his article Prof. Dan Browne in the recent viewpoint of the APS Physics magazine.

A symposium "Quantum metrology with photons and atoms" will be held on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of National Laboratory for Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics on the 17th September 2011 in Toruń, Poland.

The Laboratory for Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics in Toruń is a national consortium involving among other institutions University of Warsaw, a partner in the Q-ESSENCE project. One of the themes of the symposium will be quantum-enhanced metrology. The meeting will provide a platform to exchange ideas and recent development with other sub-fields of modern metrology.

Eindhoven University of Technology, a partner in Q-ESSENCE consortium, organizes the International Workshop on Nanowire Superconducting Single-Photon Detectors.

This one-day workshop on the physics, technology and application of single-photon detectors based on superconducting nanowires will take place on Friday September 23, 2011, in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. It will be a satellite workshop of the EUCAS 2011 - Superconductivity Centennial Conference (The Hague, September 18-23). The workshop will feature a number of invited speakers from the United States, Japan and Europe, contributed talks and posters, in an informal framework with extended time for discussions.

ID Quantique is developing a new single photon detection module called id210, already awarded with CLEO/Laser Focus World Innovation Award 2011 Honorable Mention.

ID Quantique, a partner in the Q-ESSENCE consortium, is developing a new product – new single photon detection module called id210. The development of this module is possible partly due to Q-ESSENCE support. The first version of id210 was already presented at CLEO - Laser Focus World, and Laser - World of Photonics, winning the CLEO/Laser Focus World Innovation Award 2011 Honorable Mention.
The id210 brings a major breakthrough for single photon detection at telecom wavelengths. Its
performance in high-speed gating at internal or external frequencies up to 100MHz by far surpasses the performance of existing detectors and of its predecessor, the id200-id201, that has been used by
researchers around the globe since first launched in 2002. Furthermore, for applications requiring an asynchronous detection scheme, the id210 can operate in free-running mode with detection probability up to 10%.

ID Quantique, a privately held company headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and a spin-off from the University of Geneva, is a global leader shaping the evolution of network security through the development and commercialization of Quantum Key Distribution and high-speed encryption products.

Workshop on "Entanglement in Solid State Systems" will be held on Sept. 20-22 2011 in Lecce, Italy.

http://www.wesss.nano.cnr.it/

The aim of this workshop is to bring together experts in different fields to compare experiences, approaches and strategies to control entanglement in different solid state quantum systems, such as nuclear & electronic spins, quantum dots & wires, superconducting & hybrid structures, impurities in solids, polaritons, etc. More specifically,
topics involved are:
-control, generation, robustness and transfer of entanglement;
-measurement of entanglement.
