The phenomenon of many-body localised (MBL) systems has attracted significant interest in recent years, for its intriguing implications from a perspective of both condensed-matter and statistical physics: they are insulators even at non-zero temperature and fail to thermalise, violating expectations from quantum statistical mechanics.

We investigate the dynamics of an ion sympathetically cooled by another laser-cooled ion or small ion crystal. To this end, we develop simple models of the cooling dynamics in the limit of weak Coulomb interactions. Experimentally, we create a two-ion crystal of Ca+ and Al+ by photo-ionization of neutral atoms produced by laser ablation. We characterize the velocity distribution of the laser-ablated atoms crossing the trap by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy.

Quantum Technologies: Implications for European Policy

Summary:

The Joint Research Centre, the European Commission's in-house science service, has published a Science for Policy report on Quantum Technologies.

At the Amsterdam conference the Joint Research Centre (JRC) Deputy Director General Maive Rute announced at the Amsterdam Conference on Quantum Technologies, an issue paper titled "Quantum Technologies: Implications for European Policy".

Calarco/Bolle: new cooperation models are needed to bridge the "valley of death"

Summary:

Prof. Tommaso Calarco, Institute of Complex Quantum Systems, and Michael Bolle, President of R&D, Robert Bosch GmbH, argue that new cooperation models are needed to bridge university research and industry.

In today's blog post of Commissioner Oettinger features the discussion between prof. Tommaso Calarco, Institute of Complex Quantum Systems, and Michael Bolle, President of R&D, Robert Bosch GmbH, concerning the need of new cooperation models to bridge the "valley of death".

Cold Atoms in Bordeaux

Research Type:
Experiment

The research teams of LP2N collectively known as "Cold Atoms in Bordeaux " are devoted to the use of atomic waves, either to exploit the unrivaled sensitivity of matter wave interferometers or to develop simulators where the atoms are used to study the transport properties and propagation.
