Quantum-Safe Working Group

Modern encryption methods are composed of two parts: an algorithm that encrypts or decrypts our data with a random, secret key with our data, and a method of sharing the secret key between two parties. The encryption algorithm (AES-256) appears safe, at least for the next 20 to 30 years, based on our current knowledge of cryptographic attacks. But the methods for generating and sharing the random, secret key will no longer be safe once quantum computers are readily available.

Toshiba Research Europe Ltd

Toshiba is developing a new approach to information technology that applies the fundamental laws of Quantum Physics to network communications and computing. Quantum Information Technology concerns the transport and processing of information using individual particles such as electrons or photons. Using single particles in this way brings unexpected advantages. By sending information encoded upon single photons (the particles of light) it is possible to test the secrecy of each communication.

In particular we have direct contact with Siemens IT solutions and services in the Netherlands and their corporate and research technologies unit in Munich, Germany.


Pirelli Labs Optical Innovation activities are concentrated on three main lines of research, all of which are of great importance for telecommunications: photonics nanotechnologies; optical modules and systems; devices for access networks. The scope of nanotechnology applied to photonic devices is to reach a high degree of miniaturisation of optical components using methodologies mutated from microelectronics.
