The Department of Physics and Astronomy has active research programmes in soft matter physics, semiconductor physics, astrophysics, high-energy particle physics and biological physics. All of these groups contribute to a dynamic research environment.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to become a member of the Low Dimensional Structures and Devices group in the Department to work on the EPSRC funded project "Optical Quantum Communication." The project's goal is to develop protocols for optimizing eavesdropping strategies for optical quantum communication. You will work under the direction of Dr Pieter Kok.

You will combine analytical and numerical techniques to establish information theoretic bounds on the amount of information that an eavesdropper can extract in a so-called side-channel attack of quantum communication protocols, where unintentional broadcasting of information by one or more of the communicating parties compromises the security of the channel. Understanding the information flow in side channel attacks for real and idealized devices will help create practical and secure quantum communication channels.

You will have a good honours degree in a relevant subject area (or equivalent experience) and have or be about to obtain a PhD, in quantum optics or quantum information theory.
