The Quantum Computing Technologies (QCT) group at the Institute for High Energy Physics (IFAE) in Barcelona offers a posdtoctoral position and a PhD position within the project AVaQus (Annealing-Based Variational Quantum Processors) funded by the FET Open EU program and coordinated by IFAE.

Project AVaQus aims at building a small-scale coherent quantum annealer that is programmable and addresses relevant real-life problems. The project represents an important step towards the consolidation of quantum annealing to become an established quantum computing technology, made in Europe.

The tasks for this position will involve design, fabrication, and measurement of superconducting flux qubit devices that will be part of a small-scale quantum annealing processor built together with the other project partners.

The candidates will closely work in collaboration with the following partners in the AVaQus consortium:

  • Nicolas Roch (Néel Institute CNRS, Grenoble, FR)
  • Ioan Pop (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe, DE)
  • Juan José García-Ripoll (Instituto de Física Fundamental CSIC, Madrid, ES)
  • Martin Weides (University of Glasgow, Glasgow, UK)
  • Artur Garcia Saez (Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech SL, Barcelona, ES)
  • Sal Bosman (Delft Circuits Inc, Delft, NL)
  • Michael Marthaler (HQS Quantum Simulation, Karlsruhe, DE)

Interested candidates for a PhD position are expected to hold a master’s degree in Quantum Physics. Experience in one or several of the following areas will be highly appreciated: quantum optics with superconducting devices, qubit coherent control, quantum simulations with superconducting devices, superconducting qubit fabrication, electronics, programming skills (especially Python.

Postdoctoral candidates are expected to hold a doctoral degree in Quantum Physics and must be experienced in experimental superconducting qubit device techniques in at least one of the following areas: quantum optics with superconducting devices, coherent qubit control, quantum simulations with superconducting devices, superconducting qubit fabrication.

Applications should be sent to pforndiaz [at] ifae [dot] es (Pol Forn-Díaz) and should contain an updated CV, including university track record, a letter of intent or motivation, and arrange for two letters of recommendation.

The appointment will be for three years (with the possibility to renew for a fourth year for PhD candidates). Proposed start of the appointment: October 1st, 2020. The application will be open until the position is filled. For further information, you may contact pforndiaz [at] ifae [dot] es (Pol Forn-Díaz).

IFAE is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Women are particularly encouraged to apply. Sending CVs to IFAE implies consent to the institute’s legal warning.
