PhD or Postdoctoral Position
Department of Physics

Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich

Applications are invited for a PhD position or a postdoctoral position at the Department of Theoretical Physics at the Ludwig Maximilian University (Munich, Germany) to develop research in the field of open quantum systems, under the supervision of Dr. Ines de Vega in the group of Prof. Ulrich Schollwöck.
We seek a highly motivated PhD student or postdoctoral researcher to join our theory group and work on

    •    Theory of the dynamics of open quantum systems beyond the Markov approximation,
    •    Strongly correlated many-body systems, and
    •    Implementations of dissipative systems in quantum optics and soft and condensed matter.

This position is part of a grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG) entitled “Dynamics, thermalization and motion of quantum systems in complex environments“, which aims at extending the theory and analysis of open quantum systems beyond the standard approximations.

Successful candidates are expected to bring a high enthusiasm for the above research topics, hold a Masters or equivalent degree in Physics (EU/UK) or a related field, and have a strong background in one or more of the following: quantum many-body systems, quantum optics and cold atoms, as well as programming skills and numerical simulation experience.

The successful candidate will join our international theory team, which involves postdocs, PhD and Master students. She/he will also be an integral part of the vibrant scientific environment of the Arnold Sommerfeld Center for Theoretical Physics at the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU). Further information on the research interests and members of our research group can be found in Prof. U. Schollwöck’s homepage at the LMU.

The workplace is centrally located in Munich and is very easy to reach by public transport. We offer you an interesting and responsible job with good training and development opportunities. The application of women is very welcome!

Informal email enquiries are welcome (ines [dot] vega [at] physik [dot] uni-muenchen [dot] de).
The positions will remain open until an adequate candidate is identified.
