We are launching the new interdisciplinary EC-funded ICT FET OPEN research program NANOQUESTFIT to explore the practical and fundamental

limits of the quantum superposition principle.

NANOQUESTFIT combines the expertise of the following research groups:

  • Quantum nanophysics & experimental quantum interferometry, University of Vienna: Markus Arndt (COORDINATOR)
  • Theoretical quantum optics & quantum decoherence, University of Duisburg-Essen: Klaus Hornberger
  • Physical chemistry and nanotechnology, Tel Aviv University: Uzi Even & Ori Cheshnovsky
  • Foundations of quantum physics, University of Trieste: Angelo Bassi
  • Synthetic chemistry and tailored nanostructures, University of Basel: Marcel Mayor

NANOQUESTFIT will work towards realizing:

  • New particle beam methods for quantum interferometry at high mass and complexity
  • New quantum diffraction elements for an extended class of nanoparticles
  • New decoherence studies and concepts of quantum information in tests of the superposition principle
  • High-mass quantum interference
  • Theoretical explorations of extensions to quantum mechanics
  • Experimental tests and boundaries on continuous spontaneous localization models

We are looking for PhD students and Postdocs with expertise in

  • Experimental quantum optics with an emphasis on matter wave physics
  • Molecular beam methods and cluster physics
  • Nanofabrication technologies
  • Synthetic chemistry and fluorous chemistry
  • Theoretical quantum physics, in particular molecular quantum optics and open quantum systems
  • Models of spontaneous wave function collapse
  • Decoherence and open quantum systems
  • Stochastic methods in quantum mechanics

For details of our research program, see www.nanoquestfit.eu

This is an open call and applications will be considered at any time until the above website indicates that all positions have been filled.

We encourage highly motivated and well-trained young scientists to submit their complete applications (CV, list of publications, work experience, distinctions, references if applicable) to markus [dot] arndt [at] univie [dot] ac [dot] at

NANOQUESTFIT supports the EC agenda on gender balance and particularly encourages young female scientists to apply.
