A three-year position for a PhD student is available in the Department of Physics at the University of Dortmund. The position is part of an EU-funded network working on coherent optical processing in rare-earth ion crystals. The goal of the project is the development of technologies for storing photonic quantum states in the crystal with high fidelity and high efficiency, with storage times exceeding one second.

Many emerging quantum technologies require the storage of photonic quantum states, e.g. in the context of quantum cryptography. This is usually achieved by absorbing the photon in a suitable material, in such a way that the information contained in the state of the photon is transferred to the degrees of freedom of the material. From there, the quantum information can be recalled and transferred to another "flying qubit". Crystals containing rare earth ions are particularly well suited for this purpose, since their electronic states have long lifetimes and the inhomogeneous broadening of the electronic resonance lines is relatively weak.

The successful candidate will tackle this research project in collaboration with partners from several European countries. He / she will use experimental techniques from high-resolution laser spectroscopy and magnetic resonance to store the photonic quantum states and extend their lifetime as long as possible. The theoretical aspects of this project require familiarity with the basics of quantum information processing.

The salary for this position will be of the order of 3800 EUR / month, depending on marital status.
