Specific subject description

The Faculty of Science at the University of Gothenburg invites applications for a position as Professor of Experimental Atomic and Molecular Physics - including atomic-, molecular and optical physics (AMO) and adjoining subject areas, at the Department of Physics.

The Department of Physics at the University of Gothenburg employs a total staff of about 90 full time employees, including some 30 faculty members. Research and teaching is carried out in close collaboration with several departments at Chalmers University of Technology within the framework of the Gothenburg Physics Centre. This means that the successful applicant will be active in one of the broadest and largest physics environments in Sweden.

Within the subject area of atomic-, molecular and optical (AMO) physics, research at the Department of Physics mainly concerns the physics of molecules and clusters (theory and experiment) and ionized atoms (experiment). The successful applicant would be equally welcome to pursue research related to existing activities at the department or to develop completely new experimental research in the area of AMO physics or bordering areas. The Department is housed in newly renovated facilities. The new professor will have access to three laser systems, which are jointly used and supported by the experimentalists of the department (one enhanced femtosecond system and two nanosecond OPO lasers).

Job assignments

We are looking for a senior scholar with the ability to build an internationally competitive research team at the Department. The main activity will involve research within the subject area of the position, supervision of doctoral students and both undergraduate and graduate teaching. The appointee is expected to take responsibility for experimentally-oriented teaching at the Department. The duties also include outreach to the community and may include management responsibilites. The holder is expected to teach in Swedish within two years.

Eligibility

The qualification requirements stated in the Higher Education Ordinance will be applied for the position. An additional requirement is the ability to teach in Swedish or English.

Assessment

Scientific proficiency withn the subject area of the position is the most important criterion for assessment of the applicant’s skills and merits. Scientific proficiency is documented primarily through publications in leading, peer-reviewed journals and, e.g., ability to obtain external research funding, invitations to conferences and commissions of trust in the scientific community.

The second most important criterion for assessment is pedagogical proficiency,as demonstrated by, e.g. experience of cours development, results from evaluations of teaching activites and successful supervision of PhD students and degree students.

Thirdly, the interest for developing external contacts with industry or public engagement and outreach activities, as well as the ability to lead and manage research and teaching programmes will be considered.
