The York Centre for Quantum Technologies (YCQT) is an interdisciplinary centre that includes activities in the departments of Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Mathematics and Physics. YCQT also hosts the leadership of the UK Quantum Communications Hub, with Professor Tim Spiller as the Director of both the Centre and the national Hub.

This new Chair in Experimental Quantum Communications is a key appointment for the YCQT. Dependent upon your preferences and research portfolio, the potential for collaborations (experimental and theoretical) with current York staff, and laboratory requirements, the Chair could be based in one of the departments associated to the YCQT, or be a joint appointment.

The Role
Your role will be to establish experimental activity in quantum communications at York. You will be supported with suitable laboratory facilities and significant start-up funding along with the support of additional appointments. We anticipate you will secure additional research funding with particular consideration for the evolving national and international funding environment in the quantum technologies area. You will also be expected to take on teaching and administrative responsibilities commensurate with the position, carrying out these activities to a high standard.

Given the evolving landscape of academic research in this sector, applications in growth areas are particularly encouraged. Examples include, but are not restricted to:

  • quantum key distribution (QKD) with novel or entangled states of light
  • advanced quantum networking
  • device-independent and measurement-device-independent QKD
  • communication technologies and applications beyond QKD
  • quantum communications in space.

We welcome applications from candidates with research interests in any areas of experimental quantum communications.

Key requirements:

  • PhD relevant to experimental quantum communications
  • An outstanding track record of internationally-recognised contributions to the advancement of knowledge in quantum communications
  • Ability to define, lead, manage and attract funds for internationally excellent research, operating across disciplinary boundaries
  • International leader in quantum communications, leadership of relevant research group/theme
  • Demonstrable capacity for strategic thinking and planning
  • Significant and sustained success in accessing research grants and other external funding

Salary will be commensurate with experience on the professorial scale, current minimum £62,585 per annum.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Professor Tim Spiller (timothy [dot] spiller [at] york [dot] ac [dot] uk). Alternatively for a confidential discussion contact Paul Ellison (Recruitment Adviser) on +44 (0)1904 324865.

Closing Date: 3 April 2018
Interview Date: 16 May 2018

We particularly encourage applications from female candidates, who are currently under-represented within the University of York at these levels

The University of York is committed to promoting equality and diversity
