Quantum dynamics and energy transfer in optically driven nanosystems

At:
Heriot-Watt University
Deadline:
31 December, 2010

This theoretical project is about the quantum properties of nanomaterials, which have atom-like discrete quantum energy levels. Examples of such systems include semiconductor quantum dots and molecular materials. We will be interested in how an optical driven field can create quantum coherence in these solid-state systems and how long this coherence can be maintained. We will go on to look at how energy can transfer between connected nano-materials and whether this influences the efficiency of the process.

Measurement-based Quantum Computing

At:
Heriot-Watt University
Deadline:
31 December, 2010

One can regard quantum entanglement as the fundamental resource needed in order to execute quantum algorithms. Certain kinds of entangled states exist which are universal resources, in the sense that any quantum algorithm can be performed simply by performing a prescribed series of quantum measurements. Moreover, even the entangled state itself can by created by making measurements [1].

PhD position Ultracold Atoms in High Finesse Resonator

PhD studentship in physics of low-dimensional quantum gases

At:
Vienna University of Technology
Deadline:
1 November, 2010

A 3-years PhD student position is available at the Quantum Optics Group, Institute of Atomic and Subatomic Physics, Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, Austria. The project is to numerically model thermalization, decoherence and dephasing in low-dimensional ultracold atomic Bose gases. The work is to be done in a small theoretical group in an everyday close collaboration with the experimental group of Prof. J. Schmiedmayer.
