We are looking for a PhD student and Postdoc, with a background in Physics or related discipline, to join our experiments on superconducting quantum electro-mechanics.

Project description:

The Laboratory of Photonics and Quantum Measurements at EPFL has established experiments that achieve quantum control of engineered micromechanical oscillators coupled superconducting resonators at milli-Kelvin temperatues. Building on recent advances that have achieved utilizing these systems as dissipative quantum reservoirs, to engineer and control the microwave field, we seek to explore experiments for real time quantum feedback, quantum enhanced metrology, and the development of a new generation electromechanical devices, that can be integrated with qubits.  Other topics of interest include new nanoscale devices capable of quantum coherent transferring microwave photons to the optical domain using novel hybrid cavity electro-optical transducers. The research is embedded in two EPFL coordinated networks on Optomechanical Technologies (OMT) and Hybrid Optomechanical Technologies (HOT). Close collaborations with IBM Zurich Research exist.

EPFL and ETHZ belong to the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology and is located on the shores of Lake Geneva. EPFL maintains extensive infrastructure for advanced nano-fabrication, indispensable for the current projects.

Your profile and requirements:

The research encompasses a wide range of skills, from nanofabrication of superconducting electromechanical devices, to measurements in a milli-Kelvin dilution refrigerator to simulation and quantum theory.  While any knowledge concerning the latter is an asset, candidates with a strong background in related fields and in particular expertise in AMO Physics and Quantum Optics will be considered.
